The new Joint Health - Integrated MSK Service is a Consultant led inter disciplinary team consisting of Specialist Doctors; MSK Physiotherapists, Advanced Practice Physiotherapists & Podiatrist. You will work directly with Consultants in Physiotherapy, Neurosurgery and Sport and Exercise medicine providing excellent opportunities for professional development.

 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To assist in the triage of all musculoskeletal referrals, selecting appropriate patients for the JH service and arranging re-direction of care in accordance with agreed triage criteria & patient pathways.

2. To undertake a highly specialised assessment and autonomous diagnosis of patients with complex orthopaedic / MSK symptoms respecting people’s privacy, dignity and individuality.

3. To request and interpret appropriate Haematological and Radiological investigations / results Inc. X-ray; Ultrasound; MRI & NCS in adherence with agreed clinical protocols & pathways.

4. Using advanced clinical reasoning skills, autonomously diagnose and arrange appropriate onward management of patients according to clinical need and in adherence with agreed patient pathways E.g. Secondary Care Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, Neurosurgery

5. To provide specialist Physiotherapy advice and treatment for patients with complex MSK conditions

6. To act as a source of Specialist MSK knowledge and skills to all Physiotherapy Staff

7. To monitor the appropriateness of JH referrals, obtaining information relevant to patient care and ensuring appropriate discharge / ongoing care.

8. To work on any of the Trust covered sites as directed by the line Manager.

9. To take part in evening and weekend clinics as required

10. To administer Injection Therapy or be willing to complete additional post graduate training in Injection Therapy if required

11. To ensure a high standard of patient care is provided, developing, implementing

And reviewing clinical standards/clinical audit relevant to the work undertaken.

12. To be a proactive member of the multi-disciplinary team and actively participate in JH meetings.

13. To ensure effective communication with patients, carers, GPs and all other Health and Social Care Professionals regarding all aspects of patient care.

14. To process and deliver complex information with empathy and reassurance, frequently communicating with patients who may have barriers to understanding.

15. To ensure where necessary the provision of cover for the JH service as a whole, E.g. in times of annual leave / sickness etc.

16. To ensure that any equipment, furniture or building in need of repair is reported to the correct authority as necessary.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Physiotherapy
  • At least 6 years post graduate experience and a significant time in MSK setting
  • HCPC registered
  • Evidence post graduate study
  • Willingness to undertake study relevant to role
  • Experience in MSK outpatient setting
  • Experience as B6 MSK Practitioner
Desirable criteria
  • Previous advanced physiotherapy practitioner experience in either Ortho or MSK interface services
  • Membership of specialist interest groups
  • Relevant research/audit experience

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate specialist Physiotherapy clinical skills advanced clinical reasoning in MSK Assessment, diagnosis and treatment
  • Ability to work independently as MSK Physiotherapy clinical specialist and work as part of a MDT
  • Awareness of current NHS Policies & Frameworks/relevant quality indicators in clinical specialty
  • Ability to manage change in a flexible, diplomatic and positive manner

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experince in MSK out patient setting - assessment and treatment.
  • band 6 MSK experience in outpatient setting number years or evidence transferrable
Desirable criteria
  • B7 experience in MSK out patient setting or equivalent
