This post involves providing anaesthetic services for a wide range of surgical specialties, including general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, ENT, obstetrics. The post includes being part of a shift rota to cover out of hours services on the ICU, and maternity units.
The successful candidate will have at least 2 years experience of anaesthesia and have passed basic competencies including for Obstetrics. They will have worked recently in the NHS. They should also have experience in working on the ICU and will be expected to run lists without direct supervision.
All principal duties are usually undertaken under the local and distant supervision of a Consultant Anaesthetist at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust.
Main duties of the job
The post has a resident on call duties, primarily within the maternity and critical care units, although may occasionally involve resident on-call duties for the emergency list (1st on-call). The post includes being part of a shift rota to cover out of hours services on the ICU, and maternity units, and attracts 10 + 3.5 PA’s of which 1.5 are for SPA.
The department covers a wide range of surgical specialties including General and Vascular Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Day Case ENT Surgery, Dental Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and Intensive Care. There is a Supra Regional Spinal Injuries Unit at the Southport Hospital site and an acute and chronic pain service exists on both sites.

The Department of Anaesthesia consists of 17 Consultants, 3 Associate Specialists, 13 Specialist Doctors, 3 ST trainees, 3 CT2’s, 3 CT1’s and 1 ACCS trainees providing an Anaesthetic service to the Trust which is based on two main sites at Southport & Formby District General Hospital and Ormskirk District General Hospital.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Anaesthetic services are provided for routine and emergency surgical, orthopaedic, urological, gynaecological, ENT and Ophthalmology lists, as well as to the Accident and Emergency Department, Critical Care Unit, Delivery Suite and Maternity unit, as well as the Acute and Chronic Pain Service. Involvement may also be required in the initial resuscitation and stabilisation of the critically ill child.

- GMC Registration and License to Practice
- FRCA (Primary or Full)
- A breadth of demonstrable experience in an acute hospital setting including 2 years experience post full registration.
- At least 2 years experience of clinical anaesthesia.
- The ability to anaesthetise lists with distant supervision
- Experience of working in a critical care unit
- Experience of working as an obstetric anaesthetist
- LS/ BLS
- ALS/ ACLS/ ATLS
- Completed at least 1 audit topic
- Research Publication
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
